My Favourite Music

The main purpose of this list is entertainment. I love reading other people’s favourite albums lists and have discovered loads of good stuff over the years I might not otherwise have come across. If my list helps someone else do the same it’s more than done its job. Any errors are my fault and it will get updated as and when I feel like it. For more information on how the list was made, scroll to the end.  Enjoy!

HOW I MADE THE LIST (for those with time on their hands)

What gets on the list? Good question. I don’t necessarily own everything listed but to be included, it has to have resonated with me in some way.

My two guiding principles are:

a) Whether I like it

b) Whether I think it’s artistically interesting

The best things on the list satisfy both – (Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, early Metallica, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong etc). Some I find more artistically great than enjoyable (Robert Johnson, Nico) and with some it’s the other way around.

Individual tracks listed indicates a particularly great track. This may or may not be on an otherwise inconsistent release.

A few items have a * after them. This means they are among the best things I have heard and are highly recommended.

There’s quite a few famous names missing. In some cases, that’s simply because I can’t stand them (Tom Jones, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, 99% of Rod Stewart). With others, I can appreciate their talent but it’s just not my thing. There’s plenty of artists I find quite listenable in small doses but not enough to recommend them other than as an occasional indulgence. While there’s some superstars on my list, record-sales alone are no basis for making the cut. Thus, the caterwauling of Dizzee Rascal may have sold a gazillion times more records than other artists, but that still doesn’t make him worthy of inclusion.

There’s no spoken-word material on here (comedy routines, for example). This doesn’t mean there’s none I like – I’m just trying to keep the list manageable. Otherwise, routines by George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore would certainly make the cut as would some vintage Python material and maybe even some Flanders and Swann.

There’s hardly any hip-hop (Public Enemy aside) as it’s a genre I largely detest. I was tempted to stick Eminem in as I think he’s among the better things the genre has thrown up, but I’m not that perverse.

Classical and jazz are sparingly represented. With both I’m pretty conservative in my tastes. For classical there’s little modernist stuff beyond Gershwin and with jazz there’s no fusion other than Miles. I’ve nothing against such favourites as the Water Music, Messiah, Eine Kleine Nachtmusike etc. They just don’t excite me enough to include them. You can blame over-exposure if you like.

There’s practically nothing from the last decade or so (the naughty noughties). So you’ll find no Kaiser Chiefs, no Strokes, no Bloc Party, no Kasabian, no Killers etc. That doesn’t mean I hate all post-1999 records – I don’t. I just find the great majority of those I’ve heard boring. Beck’s ‘Sea Change’ is one happy exception – there are others.

There’s also  very little ‘World Music’ (a term of questionable usefulness), other than predictable choices like Bob Marley and the Wailers. This will get expanded in time so watch this space 🙂

I prefer to recommend studio albums where possible, but for artists recording before the album era of the mid-60s onwards, it’s often easier to grab a decent best-of. Go on, knock yourself out. Nobody’s judging you, least of all me. There’s a couple of film soundtracks. I’ve tried to go for ones with original scores rather than just excuses to recycle popular hits of yesteryear.

I included the miscellaneous section for those great songs often by artists I find largely inconsistent. A good playlist for the iPod, maybe?

Just because something gets on my list doesn’t necessarily mean I think it’s the best thing ever (although I might do). Similarly, if your favourite singer is missing from my list, doesn’t mean I think they’re awful. I may of course decide they’re awful upon listening to them.
