There has been at least three film versions of I am Legend the post-apocalyptic novel by Richard Matheson. We had Vincent Price’s Last Man on Earth (1964), Charlton Heston’s The Omega Man (1971) and most recently, Will Smith’s I Am Legend (2007). None of these films however reflects a key fact about the protagonist Robert Neville – he is a huge classical music fan. Civilisation may have collapsed, but that’s no reason to let cultural standards slip – zombies or otherwise. So here, for your pleasure, is every piece of music Neville listens to during the course of the book. Enjoy.
Beethoven – Symphony No 3 ‘Eroica’, Symphony No 7 and Symphony No 9 ‘Choral’
Irving Berlin – ‘How Dry I Am’
Bernstein – Symphony No 2 ‘The Age of Anxiety’
Brahms – Piano Concerto No 2
Mozart – Symphony No 41 ‘The Jupiter’
Roger Leie – ‘The Year of the Plague’ (fictional; Neville destroys the record in a fit of rage)
Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No 2
Ravel – Daphnis et Chloe Suites 1 and 2
Schoenberg – Verklarte Nacht (‘Transfigured Night’)
Schubert – Symphony No 4 ‘Tragic’
